The Pastor's Corner - Fall 2009

It has been a few months since our last newsletter and we have officially begun our seventh year together as of July 1st. I am thankful for your confidence and for the opportunity to continue as your pastor. I continue to pray that with God's help, we can work together to do God's work and God's will here at Henderson UMC.

This year we are celebrating 179 years of ministry in this location. Next year will be the big 180th Anniversary Celebration. Many things have changed over those years. There have been at least three different buildings and a brush arbor as places of worship. The church has seen many in leadership over the years, both pastoral and laity. There are families whose members have deep roots in the history of Henderson from the beginning. Many people have come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior over the years in this place. We have seen times of growth and times of despair and fear of what the future holds. Churches do tend to cycle with some times being periods of growth and new life alternating with periods of slack times.

Even though membership has been declining for many years now primarily due to death, we actually have a higher percentage of our membership attending worship during the year. We continue to attract our new members from among those who have retired to live in our area. We are so thankful that they feel welcomed and nurtured among us. The 9AM-worship service is growing and involving a different and younger group of members whose lives are lived at a faster pace. Our 11 AM worship is still the popular service among those who have been long time members in the area.

In order to continue to grow and offer what folks are looking for in Christ. The Gospel has not changed over the years, but the way of communicating the Gospel must always be evolving to reach the culture around us. Gone are the days when folks will come just because the church doors are open.

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room!
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little, but not too long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember all the things we once shared;
miss me, but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,
And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's Plan,
a step on the road to home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart,
Go to the friend you know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me, but let me go!

United Methodist Women News

The UMW annual Prayer Breakfast was held at the Church on July 11, 2009. Pastor Sue Ann was the Speaker for this event. She gave a spiritually uplifting talk on the power and importance of prayer in our daily living. We wish more ladies in the Church could have been with us for this time of food and friendship. Thanks to the Lillian Reynolds Circle for hosting this event. There were 14 members and 3 guests who enjoyed this time together.

We held our annual UMW Sunday on August 9, 2009, our members conducted the entire worship service including the meditation. Bonnie and Gwen Headley and Anne Crowder did a great job chairing this event. On this Sunday we dedicate our candle burning monies, also we honored two of our members, Geraldine Wilkins and Laura Deitz because of health issues neither of these ladies were able to attend this service. We also remembered Bob Taylor, our Pastor Emeritus, with a gift to missions in his honor, and we gave a gift to missions in memory of Mrs. Frances B. Headley who was a member of Henderson Church for many years.

The next event sponsored by the UMW will be a Children's Sabbath to be held on October 18. Pastor Sue Ann will be in charge of this event.

October 31, is the day of our annual Bazaar and luncheon. Please keep this date in mind, as we need a lot of help and a lot of everything that will make this a success. This is our one and only fundraiser for missions this year. There will be more information in the bulletins. We will appreciate any and all help.

The best news we have to report is the addition of two new members, Jane Dawson and Sharon Mann. These ladies will be great assets to our UMW, and we welcome them and look forward to having them on our team.
Until next time,
Elsie Newsome, UMWPresident

Lillian Reynolds Circle

Our Circle is getting smaller each year with two being inactive. Most of our ladies are in their seventies and eighties.

We are thankful for Carol who keeps our Minutes and uses the computer, (she is the youngest member). Sandy Bailey helps to gather things for our Kits for Conference. We had 14 to send this year.

Delphine, Rita and Nancy help make and buy food for Ruritan's dinner. We served them several times this year. Francis Stevens and Custus O'Bier bake food for the Ruritans and support us in all ways. Thelma Ingraham has not been well, she comes when she is able.

Our yearly contribution is our Prayer Breakfast, getting the Speaker, setting up the tables and decorations, we also help with the food. We pay our dues for Beach Stone and other dues as well. We helped with the food table at the Bazaar and we also contributed to the Vacation Bible School. Brought clothes for the Basement Closet and food for the pantry. We send cards and visit when we can. We pray we will be able to continue for another year.

P.S. Two things we should not forget, Rita Blundon's wonderfully decorated house at Christmas time and all the great food our members provide. We love Christmas at Rita's and we also enjoyed our lunch out at Lee's Restaurant this year.

Henderson Home Meals Program

The Henderson Home Meals Program is well into its 10th year of operation. It began in January 2000 serving meals on Wednesday and Friday to twelve members in the community, most of who were members of the Church. Initially, the purpose of this program was to provide well-balanced meals to those elderly and living alone, which might not otherwise fix for themselves.

In January 2001 the program was expanded to Monday, Wednesday and Friday, where it remains today. We are currently providing meals to 34 individuals. Further expansion was to include individuals who were recovering from an illness and not able to do for themselves on a temporary basis. Also, members of a family where due to illness, a caretaker was involved. In these cases, meals were provided to give the caretaker one less thing he/she had to worry about three times a week.

This program is self-supporting and has not, at any time, relied on Church funds. The program is supported by private donations and fund raising efforts by the Home Meals workers. The team serves the Ruritan Club four times a year, has hosted Spaghetti and Pancake Suppers, made holiday wreaths and catered the Callao Fire Department's Christmas Party. The monthly expenses to provide the meals are approximately $450.00. The recipients are not required to pay for the meals. If they choose to make a donation, it is accepted, although not a condition of receiving meals.

We are also fortunate to receive donations of food from several sources. O'Biers Seafood makes a regular contribution and many people have provided fresh produce during the growing season. Other church and civic groups have donated food left over from a food event of their own.

If you wish to make a donation to this ministry, please make your check out to Henderson's Home Meal Program and mail it to the church to the attention of Margaret Beauchamp, Treasurer.

The Pastor's Corner - Fall 2009 Continued

If what we have to offer is less than appealing, there is a church up the road willing to offer an updated presentation of the Gospel. We are a media rich culture, so we need to teach and preach using video and audio resources and the latest ways of communication.

Every church and every pastor need to be learning what they need to do to most effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a world that is living in darkness and sin. Change is scary. Change will require more work from all of us, but change we must unless we are willing to write our eulogy. I believe that God has a plan for Henderson to be in ministry well into the future and I ask you to join your leaders and me in doing the work to go where God is leading us.

Pastor Sue Ann Salmon

Witness/Hospitality Committee

We feel we are fortunate to have had several visitors coming to our church on a regular basis this summer. To welcome our visitors and to help them feel more comfortable, we`are encouraging everyone to wear nametags as often as possible. Even though some of us feel uncomfortable wearing them, we need to put ourselves in our visitors' place and realize how helpful nametags are when there are so many new names for them to learn. Wearing them should also be helpful to others who have been at Henderson for a while, too, because some have said they are still not sure of everyone's names. We are going to start a contest at the beginning of September to encourage all members and visitors to wear their name tags every Sunday for 3 months. There will be a sign up sheet in the narthex, and those who wear their name tags most often will have a chance to win one of 3 prizes: a $50, a $30, or a $20 gift certificate to Wal-Mart. If you can't find your old nametag or perhaps never had one made, please let us know and we will make sure that you have one as soon as possible.

Beginning this month as well, we will try to have a series of welcoming get-togethers at the parsonage for our visitors and newest members. We` also hope to have a supper for young adults in our church to give them a chance for fellowship and an opportunity to let us know what they would like to see happening at Henderson. If you have any other ideas or hear of something going on at another church that has worked well for attracting and keeping new members, please let us know.

Neblett Montague (529-5438)
Witness Chairman

Wesleyan Fellowship

Each month the Wesleyan Fellowship meets with one of our members. In May we met with Gwen and had 8 members present. The Kits for Conference were discussed and it was decided that each member would fix their own.

In June we met at For the Occasion in Callao and had dinner and a short meeting. We were glad to have Bea and Olive with us and two visitors, Nellie Landrum and Sharon Mann. We're hoping that they might become new members.

This year our scholarships were presented to Caroline McKenney and Angie Headley. We enjoyed help with the Prayer Breakfast. It's a lot of fun finding out who your prayer partner has been for the past year.

In August we met with Lynn, Gary and Lauren Gill for our picnic with our husbands. There were 16 present. The Gill family always makes us feel so welcome.

Our Circle took part in our UMW Sunday program. It was a good message just "Bring Your Burdens to Jesus". We thank Ron Jewell for taking part in the Service.

At our September meeting we will bring new stuffed animals for our project at Church. If you know of someone that needs cheering up, take a stuffed animal from Church and let them know we will be praying and thinking of them.

When we meet each month we have different projects we work on and enjoy the fellowship and laughing with each other. Someone usually has a story to tell.

We welcome our new member Jane Dawson.

Homecoming - October 11, 2009

At the last Church Council Meeting as we were discussing Homecoming 2009, it was suggested that we do something different and there was a consensus to go forward with a program of mostly music and testimony this year. One of the bands from a neighboring church, The Rappahannock Church of Christ, will come and bring us a message in music and testimony. A former member, Kenny Beauchamp sings in the band that will be bringing the music. They will sing some in the morning, then have a break for lunch and resume singing in the afternoon. Others will also be bringing us gospel music in the afternoon. Come and bring friends, children, grandchildren and former members along with you. There will only be one worship service on this day at 11 AM. Let's come together and make the 179th Anniversary a really special occasion.

Homecoming Letters and Envelopes will be arriving in your mailboxes by mid-September. Please prayerfully consider how you can help support the ministry of your church even if you cannot be present that day.

We thank you for your continued support even in these difficult economic times.

Pin Grant Received from DuPont

In early July, your church just received a new People in Need Grant from DuPont totaling $7,500. There are restrictions on how it can be spent and it must be spent for people that truly are in need. We try to limit gifts to those who live within a 5 to 6 mile radius of the church and our members that have genuine needs. If you know of someone needing help, please see one of the PIN Grant Committee Members: Pastor Sue Ann, Ernie Thrift, Margaret Beauchamp and Sandy Bailie.

ANNOUNCEMENTS CORNER:

This year we have welcomed three new members by transfer from other United Methodist Churches. They are Angie Headley from Warsaw UMC and David & Sharon Mann from Melrose UMC. We are so happy to receive each of them into our membership. Angie has already been helping with teaching Sunday school and Sharon & David have provided us with beautiful music. We are truly blessed with these new members.

We have other folks who are attending regularly, but not ready to make the commitment and that is okay. Please remember that when you are ready to commit, Pastor Sue Ann would love to hear from you at 529-6676 or sasalmon@verizon.net

We celebrate the recent appointment of member, Mike McKenney -to the position of Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. Many friends and members of Henderson UMC celebrated his new position and honored him with their presence at his investiture ceremony on May 29th.

For the Fifth Sunday Luncheon in the month of May, our church honored Mike and Almeda McKenney for their years of faithful service to this church. Mike has taught the Arlene Taylor SS Class for many, many years, served as Lay Leader for years, and Almeda has taught SS for children for many years as well as planning and coordinating Vacation Bible School every year for lots of years. Together they worked with our church's youth group for the last several years. They and their children have really blessed this church.

For your information, if you see Mike in his official capacity as judge, you should address him as Judge McKenney or Your Honor. In his capacity as church member, we may still call him Mike.

Since the death of Frances Boyle Headley, we have two persons who have been active members longer than anyone else -(80 years) since August 1929. They are Olive Hall and Hilton Headley. While Olive and Hilton are not the oldest members, they have been members longer than the oldest member has. We thank Olive and Hilton for their faithfulness.

Church Picnic

Sunday, October 4th at the Ruritan Park - 11am

Once again we will meet for worship, lunch, games and fellowship at The Ruritan Park off Harryhogan Rd. in Callao. It has been a great success and very special day. Thanks so much for the hard work that the women and men of the Early Morning Worship put into making this event a great success for all members. Please plan to come.

New Way to do Charge Conference:

This year our Charge Conference will be held at Melrose UMC on Sunday, November 3rd. Anyone is welcome to come. Only those who are elected members of Church Council have a vote, but every member has voice. We will be sharing with Melrose what has worked for us as well as what has been a struggle. We will elect officers for 2010, vote on a budget for 2010 and set goals for 2010.

How can you serve your church in 2010? How would you like to serve your church? We need more folks involved in serving the church to do the work of God in this place. God gave each of you gifts for the good of the Body of Christ. What is your gift?
